A study, commissioned to professors Giovanni Vaia and Raffaele Pesenti of the Ca' Foscari University of Venice, quantified the reduction in polluting emissions thanks to Telepass stations that avoid vehicles to stop to collect highways tickets and pay. The study analyzed one of the busiest stretches of motorway in Italy and Europe, the A4 Brescia-Padova: 146 km of freeway with an average of 95,000 vehicles per day and over 50 million vehicles passing through each year in pre-Covid periods.
The research applied a special mathematical-scientific model developed by the academic team and calculated that an emission of 3,350 tons of CO2 in 2019 was avoided thanks to the use of Telepass (2,880 tons of CO2 in 2020).  Translating this figure in terms of car trips from Rome to Milan, the savings correspond to more than 35,000 trips, or about 1,500,000 liters of gasoline, with a huge benefit for the environment but also for people in terms of noise pollution, road congestion and related costs.
